Today is officially Google’s 7th birthday, I believe. At least the logo on the search page would seem to say so.
I’m not sure when a search engine reaches maturity, but they’ve decided today to stop boasting about how many web pages they have in their index. I guess they feel the arguments about who has the bigger one was getting out of hand. So they now have an even simpler search page.
You might begin to wonder whether this is an indication that they feel a need to be more dignified. Kathy Sierra points out the possible dangers of dignity in a recent item on an article by Paul Graham entitled Dignity is Deadly. Well while Google retains that curious I’m feeling lucky button that they’ve had since birth, I assume, we don’t need to worry too much. Giving up that would almost be like giving up Jeeves.
